Or advice (solicited or otherwise) from a colleague. Or a statement made by someone that has a personal pinch to it, during a meeting or just a plain email that sends you for a toss.
From your perspective — Whatever the statement is or feedback was, it was wrong — that person doesn’t understand the situation! They don’t really know what you do. And besides, for you they are oblivious of your situation, right? ... wrong!
Getting feedback you disagree with can be maddening, and while you might be tempted to launch into a well-reasoned rebuttal or counter-attack, it’s better not to react right away.
Sometimes, you need to be prepared for some positive criticism as well. You can’t just brush off anything that’s said negatively about you. There may be an iota of truth that you need to reflect upon before you counter-attack, which in itself is a wrong approach.
Give yourself time to understand what the person is trying to convey. Ask clarifying questions such as “When you say ‘…xyz…’ can you tell me more about what you mean?” You might also ask a trusted friend (but not someone who only tells you what you want to hear) whether the feedback rings true. Once you fully understand the message and have taken the time to consider it, then you can decide how to respond.
Probably some people may be twisting your sensitive buttons just to disturb you, who knows?
So the next time something unpleasant is said about you – Respond and don’t React!
